BOOSTING RURAL LIVES, PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT

Many farmers in rural areas in Kenya still rely on traditional use of fuel in forms of firewood and charcoal burning for cooking and warming their homes.

Burning of charcoal for firewood has a negative impact on our environment since it contributes to deforestation and heavy pollution to our environment.

Emission of carbon dioxide during cooking with charcoal or firewood is also a health hazard especially to women and children whose traditional roles in the kitchen often expose them to harmful inhalation of smoke in their homesteads.

To mitigate against air pollution and green gas emission, we should come up with effective ways that rural farmers and the community can adopt for a safe, clean and smart energy.

Biogas: The Safe Path to Clean Energy

The introduction of biogas as a source of energy use to the community in rural areas is a safe, clean energy solution.

Biogas can be generated from bio-digesters for use in cooking, heating, lighting and drying of crops.

Biodigesters are airtight containers in which organic waste or animal waste is deposited for fermentation to produce biogas and can be used with any organic food waste generated from homesteads, farm produce and animal waste.

Biodigesters are very easy to install according to Flexi gas, biodigesters are usually fabricated and can be installed in a few hours.

The biogas can be usable within 3 to 5 days after installation and is normally in full production within 7 to 14 days.

A standard model which is 6mcubed costs around 85,000/- and can cater for a household of up to 6 persons in a family unit and below are some examples;

BENEFITS OF BIOGAS USE AS FUEL

Less gas emission and pollution to the environment ensuring clean, smart energy.

Clean, safe energy use by the community for cooking, heating, lighting and reduction of respiratory diseases caused by smoke inhalation.

Biogas waste utilization as organic fertilizer, a liquid bio-slurry highly nutritious and environmental safe fertilizer which can be used immediately as top dressing or sprayed on plants as an effective pest repellent.

Less use of synthetic fertilizers which results in enhancement of soil health and better produce.

Excess farmers’ produce can be dried by dehydration by use of biogas dehydrators which increases the shelf life of the produce, eliminating post-harvest loss and ensuring less waste of perishable goods and more income.

Food preservation a value addition during bumper harvest and farmers can sell the produce at a later time resulting to better prices especially when there is scarcity of produce.

Dried fruits especially mango, bananas, pineapples and other vegetables like mushrooms make great snacks and add amazing benefits to the body as energy bombs, boosts immunity and other health benefits.

MARKETING & CREATING AWARENESS

Creating awareness on health issues caused by traditional methods of fuel use, reducing disease burdens and educating the rural community of the biogas benefits.

Providing financial support through the government subsidies, grants or small affordable loans to the small-scale farmer to make the biodigesters more affordable and offering after sales service.

Promote safe, clean, smart energy adoption to make the environment safe for all communities.

Enhance energy poverty reduction by ensuring every homestead has lighting in their homes and for the children during study sessions
